Sri Lankans On Adge Ahead Of Prez Rajapaksa's Resignation Today


Sri Lankans were on the edge on Tuesday as they waited whether embattled Gotabaya Rajapaksa will honour his offer to resign as president, amid reports that key members of the erstwhile powerful ruling family were attempting to flee in the face of massive public anger against them for mishandling the economy that has bankrupt the country.


Rajapaksa, whose whereabouts are not known since Friday, was blocked from departing Sri Lanka on Monday after refusing to join a public queue at the Colombo airport in order to have his passport checked by immigration, CNN reported, citing a high-ranking military source told news agency PTI.


It said Rajapaksa's aides arrived at the airport with 15 passports belonging to the president and members of his family - including First Lady Ioma Rajapaksa - who had booked seats on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight leaving for Dubai at 6:25 p.m. local time on Monday, according to the military source.


Opposition Prez Candidate Yashwant Sinha To Visit Assam Today


Opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha is slated to arrive in Guwahati on Wednesday to seek support from MLAs and MPs of opposition parties in Assam for the July 18 polls, state Congress President Bhupen Bora said here.


Sinha will arrive here on Wednesday afternoon by a chartered flight and meet opposition Congress MPs, MLAs, independent MLA Akhil Gogoi, CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar and independent Rajya Sabha MP Ajit Kumar Bhuyan, Bora told reporters on Tuesday.


NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu had visited Assam last week to campaign and had met the MPs and legislators of the ruling BJP and its allies the Asom Gana Parishad and United Peoples' Party Liberal to seek support.


Delhi: Rains Cools Down, Sultry Weather On Wednesday


After moderate to heavy rainfall at some stations across the city for the 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Delhi had negligible rainfall during the rest of the day with increased humidity. After a weeklong wait, Delhi had received rainfall with a wide ranging variation - from 0 mm to 77.5 mm - across various areas on Monday.


The IMD has yet again issued a standard and safe forecast for Wednesday. "Generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain/thunder showers with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 32 and 26 degrees Celsius," it said.


Prez Polls: NDA's Pick Murmu To Visit Jaipur On Wednesday 


NDA’s candidate Droupadi Murmu will visit Jaipur on Wednesday to seek support from legislators for the July 18 presidential polls. Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, Gulab Chand Kataria, said on Tuesday that Murmu will reach the Jaipur airport at 9.15 am to meet BJP MPs and MLAs at a hotel in Jaipur


He said all BJP legislators have been requested to reach the hotel at 10 am. Murmu is pitted against opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. On Monday, Yashwant Sinha met the legislators of the Congress and other MLAs supporting him. PTI AG AG RDK RDK RDK
