India on Saturday won the right to host the 2023 International Olympic Committee's (IOC) session in Mumbai in an unopposed race, during the 139th IOC Session in Beijing, China.


The Indian delegation comprising the country's first individual Olympic gold medallist (Beijing 2008, shooting) Abhinav Bindra, IOC Member Nita Ambani, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra, and Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur made the presentation to IOC members during the 139th IOC Session, being held alongside the ongoing Winter Olympics in Beijing.


Breaking News LIVE: PIL In SC Seeks To Make Political Parties Accountable For Promises In Manifesto

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been moved in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre and Election Commission of India (ECI) to take steps to regulate political parties and make them accountable for essential rational manifesto promises.


The petition was filed by lawyer Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay through his advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey. Petitioner has also sought direction from the Election Commission to seize the election symbol and deregister/derecognize the political parties, which fail to fulfill their essential rational promises, made in the election manifesto.


In his petition, advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay has urged the court to direct and declare that the Election Manifesto is a vision document, a published declaration of the intentions, motives, and views of the political party and used to achieve the particular goals if the political party gets elected.

Meanwhile, a special Gujarat court on Friday pronounced the death sentence on 38 out of 49 convicts in the Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case. Eleven other convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment.


Death sentence to the 38 convicts was awarded under sections 302 (murder), 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian penal Code (IPC), and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).


In other news, there's good news for India's traders: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) will be a game-changer in the nations' economic ties.


The statement came as PM Modi and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, held a virtual summit to sign the India-UAE trade pact.


The tensions on the Russia-Ukraine border have been mounting. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said it would be "catastrophic" if the Russia-Ukraine crisis escalated into a war, AFP reported.
