Global Covid-19 caseload tops 218.3 mn

The global coronavirus caseload has topped 218.3 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.54 million and vaccinations soared to over 5.32 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Thursday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll and vaccination tally stood at 218,327,987, 4,541,140 and 5,326,650,944, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 39,388,909 and 642,004, respectively, according to the CSSE. In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 32,810,845 cases.

Hibatullah Akhundzada to be leader of Afghanistan

As per a report by Tolo News, the Taliban have said that Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada will be the leader under whom a prime minister or president will run the country. Anamullah Samangani, a member of the Taliban's cultural commission, said that Akhundzada will also be the leader of the new government. 

Water logging across Delhi leaves commuters hassled

Heavy rainfall since early morning on Wednesday resulted in water logging in many parts of the national capital, causing inconvenience to the commuters. People going for work were stuck on the roads for hours because of water logging and the resultant traffic jams. Many residential colonies were also flooded. Many people using public transports to reach their work places were unable reach the bus stops or Metro stations because of heavy water logging.

The India Meteorological Department informed that Thunderstorm with moderate to heavy intensity rain would continue over many parts of Delhi and adjoining areas during the next 02 hours. After a record overnight downpour, the rainfall figures from 8.30 am till 5:30 pm in the national capital on Wednesday were: Safdarjung - 75.15 mm; Palam - 80.6 mm; Lodhi Road - 75.8 mm; Ridge - 52 mm; and Aya Nagar - 45.14 mm -- as per the data provided by the India Meteorological Department ( IMD).

Tehreek-e-Hurriyat founder Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away on Wednesday in Srinagar aged 91. Yesterday, Ambassador of India to Qatar, Deepak Mittal on Tuesday met Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, the Head of Taliban’s Political Office in Doha to discuss on safety, security and early return of Indian nationals stranded in Afghanistan. During the meeting, Mittal raised India’s concern that Afghanistan’s soil should not be used for anti-Indian activities and terrorism in any manner. The Taliban Representative assured the Ambassador that these issues would be positively addressed, news agency ANI quoted Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as saying.
