Nepal Cabinet Expansion Today
Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' is likely to expand his Cabinet today, following a power-sharing agreement on Wednesday. The top leaders of the 10 parties in the ruling alliance held two rounds of meetings to agree on the distribution of ministries among political parties.
Power-sharing and ministerial portfolio distribution had been major obstacles within the ruling alliance, as the demand for Cabinet posts exceeded the available number of ministries. The agreement involved the Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre gaining eight and five Cabinet positions, respectively, while CPN-Unified Socialist and Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal would get two positions each.
The other five political parties would get one seat each in the Cabinet. The Rastriya Swotantra Party would not join the government, with a final decision on this expected on Thursday morning. Currently, Prachanda holds approximately 16 ministerial portfolios, including the ministries of Home, Finance, Foreign, Industry and Commerce, Science and Technology, and Agriculture.
