BMC Election 2022: Elections to the country's richest municipal corporation, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), are due soon. All political parties have started preparations for BMC Polls 2022. Before the BMC elections 2022, let us get to know the current Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. 


Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation


The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is a civic governing body of Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. It is the wealthiest municipal corporation in India, with BMC's annual budget exceeding some of the smaller states in India. It was established under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act 1888. BMC is responsible for the civic infrastructure and administration of the city and some suburbs.


BMC is headed by an IAS officer who acts as municipal commissioner, wielding executive power. An election is held every five years to elect corporators, who are responsible for implementing basic civic infrastructure and discharging duties.


The mayor, usually from the majority party, serves as the head of the House. Till June 2008, all administrative businesses in the BMC were conducted in Marathi, a decision that sparked controversy, after which the BMC eased its stand and started accepting forms in English.


Mayor Of Mumbai 


At present, the mayor of the BMC is Kishori Pednekar of Shiv Sena. Kishori was born on December 25, 1962. In 2019, Kishori was elected mayor without any opposition. Kishori has worked as a nurse before entering politics. In the year 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic, she worked as a nurse to help out the community and to motivate other health workers. She became a councilor from Mumbai's Lower Parel area in 2002. After this, in the year 2012, 2017, she won the municipal council election from Shiv Sena.


Mumbai Deputy Mayor


Suhas Wadkar is an Indian politician who serves as the current deputy mayor of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, which is the richest municipal corporation in India. He was elected as the deputy mayor of Mumbai without any opposition. 


Municipal Commissioner 


At present, Iqbal Singh Chahal is the municipal commissioner of the BMC. Iqbal Singh is a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre. In his early career, he was the collector of Thane and Aurangabad districts. He also served as joint secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Women and Child Development, and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Iqbal Singh Chahal has also served as the Principal Secretary-General in the Water Resources Department and Urban Development Department of Maharashtra. Chahal received a lot of compliments for his work during the corona pandemic. He is widely credited for keeping COVID-19 under control in Mumbai.
