New Delhi: After leaders of 13 Opposition parties expressed their concern in view of the growing incidents of hate speech and communal violence across the country, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Saturday said that the appeal is as fake "as the intentions of Congress & opposition," news agency ANI reported.

"Today all opposition parties incl Congress have given a joint appeal but, this appeal is as fake as the intentions of Congress & opposition. Today, people are asking you, why the main accused of Karauli violence has not been arrested even after 14 days," he was quoted by ANI on its official Twitter handle.

"Congress is in power in Rajasthan, but no action has been taken, whereas, in MP, CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has taken strict action against the accused. It is very sad that even though you are in the opposition, still do the work of inciting fire," he further said.

Earlier today, opposition leaders, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and her Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand counterparts MK Stalin and Hemant Soren, issued a joint statement urging people to maintain peace and harmony and demanding harsh punishment for perpetrators of such communal violence.

“We appeal to all sections of the people to maintain peace and foil the sinister objective of those who wish to sharpen communal polarisation. We call upon all our party units across the country to independently and jointly work for maintaining peace and harmony,” the statement reads.
