Speaking to the media today after joining the Bihar ruling party, DGP-turned-politician Pandey said, "I was called by CM himself & asked to join. Whatever the party asks me to do, I will do. I don't understand politics. I am a simple person who has spent his time working for the downtrodden section of society."
Earlier, in a special conversation with ABP News, he said, "I have to stay in public service. Therefore, the possibility of contesting elections is very strong. I am the son of Bihar. I will serve Bihar."
It is worth mentioning that days after taking voluntary retirement, Pandey met Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Saturday. The development sparked the speculations over Pandey joining the politics. While responding to the questions of media over the purpose of his meeting he said he came to thank CM Nitish Kumar for giving him absolute freedom to carry out his duties as DGP. When asked about his plan to take a political plunge, he said he has not yet taken any decision on contesting polls.

This is not for the first time that speculations are being made that Pandey would contest elections. Even in 2009, he had taken premature retirement to contest the Lok Sabha elections, but later the state government did not accept his VRS application and reinstated him in the service.
Gupteshwar Pandey had recently been in the headlines for his stout defence of the Nitish Kumar administration when it was under attack from the Shiv Sena-led government in Maharashtra over Bihar Police's probe into the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
