Bengal Minister Subrata Saha Passes Away At 69, CM Mamata, Leader of Opposition Express Grief

West Bengal minister Subrata Saha passed away due to a cardiac arrest on Thursday in Murshidabad district. He was 69 years old and is survived by his wife, son, and daughter-in-law.

Saha, the minister of state for food processing, was recently hospitalized after experiencing chest pain and later died at Berhampore Medical College and Hospital. He had previously undergone gall bladder surgery.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari expressed their condolences for Saha's passing. Banerjee stated that Saha's "social and political contributions will be remembered forever" and Adhikari tweeted that he was "deeply anguished" by the news of Saha's death.

"I had long personal ties with Subrata babu. His social and political contributions will be remembered forever. His death has left a big void in the political spectrum," Banerjee said. She added that Saha was a star performer as the PWD minister of state.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari also condoled the minister's demise. "Deeply anguished to hear about the sad demise of West Bengal minister, Subrata Saha. Sri Saha is the MLA from Sagardighi assembly constituency. Condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. May his soul attain eternal peace," he tweeted.

Saha was a three-time TMC legislator from THE Sagardighi Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, securing consecutive victories in 2011, 2016 and 2019. 

He was born in Batanagar, South 24 Parganas district. Saha completed his bachelor's degree in commerce from the University of Calcutta and later went on to obtain a law degree from the same university. He has been active in politics for over two decades, beginning his career as a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1996.

A notice signed by Additional Chief Secretary Manoj Pant read: "Due to sad demise of Shri Subrata Saha, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Government of West Bengal, all Government Offices, Educational Institutions, Urban and Local Bodies, Corporations, Undertakings and other Grant-in-Aid Institutions under the control of Government of West Bengal will be closed today i.e. 29th December, 2022 from 2.00 p.m. for paying homage and respect to the departed soul of the dignitary."
