The police convoy bringing gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed from an Ahmedabad jail to Prayagraj entered Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning and stopped at Jhansi police lines. His brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, who is lodged in Bareilly jail, is also being taken to Prayagraj by a separate police team.

Ahmed, a former Samajwadi Party MP from Phulpur, will be produced before a court on Tuesday in connection with a kidnapping case. The court is slated to pass an order in the case.

  • Ahmed's cavalcade entered Uttar Pradesh on Monday morning and stopped at Jhansi police lines, news agency PTI reported citing officials. They said the convoy will proceed towards Jalaun and reach Prayagraj via Bundelkhand Expressway in the evening.

The cavalcade is being followed by media, Ahmed's sister, and lawyers.

  • Ahmed's brother left the jail at about 10 am, officials said, as per PTI. He is being taken to Prayagraj by a separate police team.

  • Ahmed's sister Ayesha Noori raised concerns over his safety. "We are ready to accept all the judgement. We are worried about his (Atiq Ahmed) safety. We are following him from Rajasthan (sic)," she told news agency ANI.

  • As per the police, Atiq is named in more than 100 criminal cases, including the recent Umesh Pal murder case. Umesh Pal's wife in conversation with ABP News has demanded a death sentence for Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf.

"They have brutally killed my husband," Jaya Pal demanding that Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf be hanged as exemplary action. "The way he (Umesh Pal) was murdered has shaken society. If this mafia remains alive then he can get someone else killed," she remarked.

  • Earlier in the day, a police vehicle carrying the gangster-turned-politician hit a cow in Shivpuri district of Madhya Pradesh before the convoy entered Jhansi. As per PTI, the cow fell near the road divider. After the incident, the vehicle stopped for a while before resuming the onward journey.

  • Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government does not intend to give justice to anyone, "it is looking for votes in everything."

  • The former Samajwadi Party MP was seen wearing a white turban today when got down from the police van. He replied to reporters who asked him whether he was afraid, saying "kahe ka dar" (what fear) before police personnel whisked him away, PTI reported.

  • On Sunday evening, however, after stepping out of Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad he expressed fear that he might be murdered.

"Hatya, hatya (murder, murder)," Ahmed had told reporters outside the prison.

Atiq Ahmed was shifted to the Sabarmati central jail in June 2019 following a Supreme Court verdict after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault on a real estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal while in prison in UP.

After Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 killing of then BSP MLA Raju Pal and his two security guards were killed in the brazen shooting on February 24, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had, while speaking in Uttar Pradesh Assembly, vowed to destroy the mafia.

Two of the accused were shot dead in separate encounters by police on February 27 and March 6.
