Assam Floods: People Commute On Boats Due To Inundated Roads In Silchar Town | WATCH

Assam continued to reel under devastating floods on Wednesday, with Cachar and Karimganj districts being worst affected.

New Delhi: Assam continued to reel under devastating floods on Wednesday amid incessant rains, leading to submerged roads and landslides in several regions. Videos tweeted by locals shows people commuting on boats due to inundated lanes in Silchar town in Cachar district. With the Barak River continuing to flow over the danger mark, the Cachar district administration has restricted vehicular movement on many roads.

With several parts of Cachar district, including urban and rural parts of Silchar, totally submerged, the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) carried out rescue operations in flood-hit areas.

Rescue teams on Monday evacuated more than 3,000 people, including pregnant women, children and senior citizens from different parts of Silchar town and the Cachar district, ANI reported.

According to PTI, 82 people have died till now due to the floods. Some 11 people died and seven were reported missing during the last 24 hours. Over 48 lakh people, including 2,07,143 in Cachar and 1,33,865 in Karimganj, have been affected in 32 of the 36 districts of the state so far. 

A similar situation was seen in Karimganj district after the flood waters of Kushiyara, Longai, and Singla rivers inundated several areas, affecting more than 1.34 lakh people. The flood waters have submerged several main roads of the district.

The Karimganj district administration has closed down all government and private educational institutions in the district till June 23. Rivers Brahmaputra and Kopili both are flowing above danger levels. 

The devastating floods has affected 125 revenue circles and 5,424 villages, while 2,31,819 inmates have taken shelter in 810 relief camps. Urban flooding was reported from Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Kamrup (Metro) and Karimganj while landslides had occurred at Kamrup and Karimganj during the day.

A total crop area of 1,13,485.37 hectares and 33,84,326 animals have been affected while 5,232 animals have been washed away, according to a government bulletin. Two embankments were breached, 349 roads, and 16 bridges were damaged on Tuesday.
