New Delhi: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said Punjab’s radical leader and 'Waris Punjab De' chief Amritpal Singh speaks in the language of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and that Congress and its leaders who use divisive language to disintegrate the sanctity of 'Akhand Bharat' must apologise.
Taking to Twitter, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “See who speaks the language of Rahul Gandhi! Amritpal Singh, who stormed a police station in Amritsar in a brazen act of defiance, is imitating his words. Congress, its leaders & all those who use divisive language to disintegrate the sanctity of 'Akhand Bharat' must apologise!”
In a video juxtaposing Amritpal Singh's statement with Rahul Gandhi's 'India is a union of states' speech in the Lok Sabha, CM Sarma drew a contrast between the two and said the radical leader is imitating Rahul Gandhi's words.
"There was no Bharat, no India before 1947. It's a union of states. We must respect the unions. We must respect the states. I don't agree with the definition of India," Amritpal Singh said to a television channel.
"India is described as a union of states. India is not described as a nation, but a unin of states...it is a partnershi, not a kingdom," Rahul Gandhi had said in the Lok Sabha earlier in 2022.
Meanwhile, Lovepreet Toofan, a close aide of Amritpal Singh, was released from Amritsar jail earlier in the day.
Notably, the development comes a day after Amritpal Singh’s supporters went on a rampage in Amritsar. Armed with swords, lathis and guns they attacked police, broke barricades and gathered outside Ajnala police station.
The Punjab Police had recently registered an FIR against the Khalistan activist Amritpal Singh as well as his associates on charges of abduction and rioting. The FIR was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by one Barinder Singh, a resident of Salempur village in Chamkaur Sahib, who said that he was beaten up by Amritpal and his men.
