Thiruvananthapuram: In the recent local body elections held in Kerala, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerged victorious. In the elections, the LDF won 514 Gram Panchayats, 108 Block Panchayats, 10 District Panchayats, 35 Municipalities, and 5 Corporations including the Thiruvananthapuram municipal corporations, one of the most important corporations in the state. ALSO READ | Rajinikanth Hospitalised: Superstar Rajinikanth Admitted To Hospital After Severe Fluctuation In Blood Pressure

Following the victory, the 21-year-old Arya Rajendran's name has been recommended for the Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Rajendran is currently the state president of Balasangam and also a state-level officer bearer of the Student Federation of India (SFI).

According to media reports, Arya Rajendran’s name was recommended by the CPM district secretariat convened on Friday, December 24. Rajendran if she takes oath as the Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, will become the youngest mayor in the entire country and the history of the state.

Arya Rajendran, who won as the Councilor from the Mudavanmukal ward of the Thiruvananthapuram city, studied BSC in mathematics from the All-Saints College. Her father Rajendran is an electrician while her mother works as a LIC agent.

Before Rajendran, Jameela Sreedharan, who won from Peroorkada ward was expected to be the mayor of the city.

According to sources, having a consensus face mayor in the city will benefit the party. As the party is hoping to get the same youth support as it did when VK Prashant was elected mayor earlier by appointing a young woman leader as mayor.

The local body elections in the state of Kerala for 15,962 wards in 941-gram panchayats, 2080 wards in 152 block panchayats, 331 divisions in 14 district panchayats, 3078 wards in 86 municipalities, and 414 wards in six municipal corporations were held in three phases on December 8, 10, and 14.
