On the Supreme Court constitutionally validating the removal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, "Through today’s historic verdict, the Supreme Court has upheld the decision of the Parliament on 5 August 2019. In this time, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh have seen the development, good governance and empowerment that were long their due. This has strengthened India’s unity and integrity. Today’s judgement portends a brighter future for our brothers and sisters in J&K and Ladakh. The Modi Government will continue its relentless efforts to bringing more growth and development for them."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the Supreme Court's decision to constitutionally validate the removal of Article 370 a "historic" decision that is going to make every Indian happy.
"Today, the decision of the Prime Minister @narendramodi to abolish Articles 370 and 35A of the Constitution and that entire process has been upheld by the Supreme Court. This historic decision of the Supreme Court is going to make every Indian happy," said Rajnath Singh in a post on X.
"By abolishing Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Prime Minister Modi has not only written a new chapter but has also given new strength to the unity and integrity of India. Today Jammu and Kashmir has entered a new era of development," he added.
On the Supreme Court constitutionally validating the removal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav says, "...Now that the Supreme Court has given its decision today, after it nothing new can be said anymore. People can give their opinion on the Supreme Court but everyone agrees to it...But there are a few colleagues who might still think that the decision is not in favour of the sense with which Article 370 was implemented...There are still a few questions related to the security of the borders, BJP will have to tell the people of the country what more concrete decision will be taken by it regarding security of the borders. Questions were raised regarding Ladakh and China had transgressed, it continues to remain stationed there and it has not stepped back...Questions were raised regarding the delimitation of Vidhan Sabha, seats are still vacant there...PoK is not yours but you don't accept that. Those seats are still vacant. Will BJP take a decision regarding filling those vacant seats in the time to come?..."
On SC verdict on Article 370, Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak says, "We welcome the verdict of the Supreme Court. On the Supreme Court constitutionally validating the removal of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Lt Gen Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon (Retd) former Chinar Corps Commander says, "I am happy, it's a historic day...I see the abrogation of Article 370 as an opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to move forward towards a progressive, educated life. There has been an atmosphere of happiness for the last 4 years after its removal."
National Conference chief Omar Abdullah says; "We had knocked on the doors of the Supreme Court because we were hoping for justice...We respect the Supreme Court...Our attempts will not end here. Will we approach the courts again? We will decide this after legal consultations."
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti says, "...We should not be disheartened... J&K has seen several ups and downs... SC's verdict stating Article 370 was a temporary provision, is not our defeat, but the defeat of the idea of India."
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray welcomes Supreme Court's, says: "We welcome this decision because we supported the removal of Article 370. We hope the J&K elections will be held at the earliest. Before elections, if PoK is included, then this exercise can be held in the entire Kashmir..."
Shiv Sena(UBT) MP Arvind Sawant says, "We welcome the decision but the things like rehabilitation of Hindus, putting an end to terrorism, making the people of J&K joining mainstream have not happened yet."
"I hope govt will restore full statehood to J&K and give opportunity to the people to elect their representatives," says Congress MP Karti Chidambaram.

Maharaja Hari Singh's son and senior Congress leader Karan Singh welcomes the SC's decision to uphold the constitutional validity of abrogating Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
"I welcome it. Now it has become clear that whatever happened is constitutionally valid...I request PM Modi to restore statehood soon," says Singh.
Article 370 was incorporated into the Constitution of India in view of the erstwhile state’s unique circumstances during its accession to India in 1947.
Kashmir, which was till then a princely state with a Muslim-majority population was being ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh.
It was Singh who acceded with the Union of India in 1947.
Reacting to the verdict by Supreme Court upholding the Constitutional validity of abrogating Article 370 by the Centre, Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) President Ghulam Nabi Azad says, "We are disappointed by the Supreme Court verdict."
The Supreme Court directs the Election Commission of India to conduct Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024.
Supreme Court notes that the power of the President to issue a notification that Article 370 ceases to exist subsists even after the dissolution of the J&K Constituent Assembly.
CJI says Article 370 is a temporary provision. Jammu and Kashmir did not retain an element of internal sovereignty after it acceded to India, the court adds.
CJI says: "Every decision taken by Centre on behalf of state during presidential rule can't be challenged."
The argument of petitioners that the Union cannot take actions of irreversible consequences in the State during Presidential rule is not accepted: CJI .
There are 3 judgments, one by the CJI for himself, Justice Gavai and Surya Kant, Justice Khanna in a separate one has concurred and Justice Kaul has authored a separate judgment.

After Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor, Srinagar Police has also denied claims of putting leaders in house arrest. "No person has been put under house arrest," said the Srinagar Police on X.
Lawyers in the case have assembled in the courtroom and the five-judge Constitution bench will assemble shortly to pronounce its verdict.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor says house arrest or arrest of anyone ahead of Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 "totally baseless", reports PTI. "No one has been put under house arrest or arrested due to political reasons in J&K. It is an attempt to spread rumours," he adds.
Security has been tightened in Pulwama ahead of Supreme Court's ruling.
People's Democratic Party says its chief Mehbooba Mufti was placed under house arrest on Monday ahead of the ruling by the Supreme Court.
"Even before Supreme Court judgement is pronounced, police has sealed the doors of the residence of PDP president @MehboobaMufti and put her under illegal house arrest," the party said in a post on X.
The ruling on petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 will be announced by a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. Other judges include Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who argued on behalf of the petitioners posts on X ahead of the top court's ruling: "Some battles are fought to be lost. For history must record the uncomfortable facts for generations to know. The right and wrong of institutional actions will be debated for years to come. History alone is the final arbiter of the moral compass of historic decisions."
Advocate for one of the petioners in the case, Muzaffar Iqbal says: "We are hopeful that the Supreme Court will decide and do justice with the people of J&K. We are hopeful that the SC will decide in our favour."
Article 370 was incorporated into the Indian Constitution to grant a special status to Jammu and Kashmir under which the erstwhile state was allowed to have its own constitution and autonomy over internal administration.
Under Article 370, the legislative powers of Parliament were limited to defence, foreign affairs, finance, and communications in Jammu and Kashmir.
The legislation could not be amended or repealed, without the consent of the Constituent Assembly of J&K.
BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay says: "he Supreme Court has understood that Article 370 was challenging the safety and integrity of the nation. We are confident that the verdict will be in favour of the central government's decision (to abrogate Article 370)."
One of the petitioners in the case and activist Mir Shahid Salim says: ""I feel it will be a watershed moment in the political history of Jammu and Kashmir."
Security has been heightened in Shopian ahead of Supreme Court's ruling on Article 370.

"The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on (abrogation of) Article 370 (from Jammu and Kashmir) in sometime. We are hopeful that the Supreme Court will take the right decision and uphold the Constitution of the country," says Awami National Conference leader Muzzafar Shah.
Ahead of the Supreme Court's big ruling on the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress says its hopeful that the apex court will uphold the Constitution and the sentiments of the people.
"People are expecting a lot from the Supreme Court and we believe that the SC will rightly uphold the Constitution and the sentiments of the people," says Congress Leader Ravinder Sharma.
"Elections have not been held for the last five and a half years... People demand early elections and restoration of statehood... We can only comment after the judgement comes," he adds.

The Supreme Court is set to announce its verdict on a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of the provisions of Article 370 on Monday. The Central government in 2019 decided to revoke the said article, which bestowed a special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The apex court had on September 5 reserved its verdict in the matter after a 16-day hearing. The arguments had commenced on August 2.

Several petitions were filed challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 that divided the erstwhile state into two union territories - Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. The pleas were later referred to a Constitution bench in 2019.
Ahead of the verdict, the BJP emphasised the need to respect the Supreme Court ruling on Article 370, urging against politicising the matter. National Conference leader Omar Abdullah affirmed a commitment to maintaining peace in Jammu and Kashmir, even in the face of an adverse verdict, vowing to pursue their cause within legal boundaries.
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti called for the court's verdict to unequivocally declare the BJP-led central government's decision as illegal. Former CM Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed hope for a verdict favoring the people.
Section 144 Clamped In J&K Ahead Of SC Verdict
Authorities assured robust security measures, with IGP V K Birdi underscoring the commitment to preserving peace in the Valley. While not divulging specifics, Birdi cited precautionary measures and actions against social media misuse, PTI reported. Guidelines under CrPC section 144 were issued to curb sensitive content or posts promoting terrorism and secessionism.
The guidelines were issued to provide clarity on actions that citizens should take when encountering content related to terrorism, secessionism, threats, intimidation, or communally-sensitive material on social media platforms, a circular, issued by police in several districts, read, as per PTI's report.
