Bharatiya Janata Party MP Anurag Thakur on Friday cornered Congress over its silence on the plight of Hindus and other minority comminities, who are being targeted in the violence-hit Bangladesh. Ever since the quota protest escalated into a full-fledged fight against the Sheikh Hasina-led government, the country has been witnessing multiple incidents of arson, looting, and mob attacks, and the Hindus have also been subjected to them.
Lashing out at the grand old party over maintaining silence over these attacks against the Hindus, Thakur jabbed the party asking, "What was the compulsion that they could not speak about the security of Hindus and minorities there? They spoke a lot about Gaza but not about this."
He began his address, expressing concern about the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh and stated how Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted to congratulate Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus on taking oath as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh on Thursday.
Thakur then went on to highlight that the PM also stressed that the neighbouring country must ensure the safety and protection of Hindus and other minority communities amidst the prevailing unrest. However, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge did not mention anything about the Hindus and minorities in their message when they congratulated Yunus on assuming office, he said.
"...We are all concerned with what has recently happened in our neighbouring country, Bangladesh. All political parties, in one voice, have said that we should be concerned about our people who are there. PM Modi tweeted and congratulated the PM of the Interim Government but he also said that peace, security and development of Hindus and minorities there should be ensured. But unfortunately, when the LoP and the Congress chief tweeted and congratulated him, they did not mention anything about Hindus there," Thakur stated.
"They did not mention anything about security of minorities. What was the compulsion that they could not speak about the security of the Hindus and minorities there? They spoke a lot about Gaza but you do not speak about it," the BJP MP added.
Bangladesh's interim government was formed on Thursday as Muhammad Yunus and his 16-member adviosry council were sworn in at 'Bangabhaban' by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. This development took place three days after former PM Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign and flee Bangladesh, following massive protests that turned violent.
Here's How PM Modi, Rahul Gandhi & Kharge Congratulated Yunus
As Yunus took the reigns of Bangladesh, PM Modi extended his "best wishes" to him in a post on X, saying "My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities. We hope for an early return to normalcy, ensuring the safety and protection of Hindus and all other minority communities. India remains committed to working with Bangladesh to fulfill the shared aspirations of both our peoples for peace, security and development."
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had also congratulated Yunus saying, "Congratulations to Professor Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. A swift restoration of peace and normalcy is the need of the hour."
Congress president Kharge, hoping for peace in Bangladesh, wished Yunus saying, "On the behalf of the Indian National Congress, I extend our good wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on being sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government."
"We sincerely hope that normalcy and peace returns in Bangladesh, our neighbour, with whom we Indians share a historic relationship. We pray for the safety of all the Bangladeshi people, including all the minorities," he posted on X.
