In a suspected case of accidental firing, another soldier at Bathinda military station in Punjab died of gunshot wound on Wednesday. He was immediately rushed to the Military Hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The soldier had returned from leave on April 11 and was on sentry duty with his service weapon.
"A soldier died of a gunshot wound at Bathinda Military Station yesterday. The soldier was on sentry duty with his service weapon. The weapon and cartridge case from the same weapon was found next to the soldier. He was immediately evacuated to the Military Hospital but succumbed to his injuries," said the Army, as reported by news agency ANI.
The incident is, however, not linked to another shooting that took place at the military station on Wednesday, but seems like a case of attempted suicide, said the army while speaking to the media.
"The soldier had returned from leave on April 11. The case purportedly seems to be of attempted suicide. There is no connection whatsoever with the incident that took place at Bathinda Military Station yesterday," the Army was quoted as saying by ANI.
Previous Case Of Firing
Earlier on Wednesday, four Indian army soldiers succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained during the firing incident at Bathinda Military Station.
In a statement to the media, the army said that the jawans belonged to an artillery unit and that no other injuries to personnel or loss/damage to property was reported. The area continues to be sealed off and joint investigations with Punjab Police are being coordinated to establish the facts of the case.
Army said that all aspects including the possible case of involvement of an INSAS rifle along with 28 rounds reported missing two days back are being ascertained. It added that the families of jawans killed in the incident are being informed about the loss of lives.
