New Delhi: In the race against Covid-19, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have achieved a significant milestone of fully vaccinating the eligible population across the union territory. The Andaman and Nicobar Administration in a series of tweets enlisted their accomplishment and mentioned that the milestone was achieved using only Covishield. 


“A&N achieved 100% Covid vaccine coverage making it 1st  State/UT to achieve the feat using only Covishield. UT Admin overcame Insurmountable odds for this extraordinary feat in one of the remotest part of world,” read the tweet. 






In another tweet the Andaman and Nicobar Island Administration wrote, “Vaccination in A&N was extremely challenging as the UT is spread over 836 islands Spread over 800 km from North to South separated by Rough Sea, Extremely Dense jungle, hills & exposed to Inclement weather.”


The Administration also recognised the efforts put by the health workers in reaching the farthest corners of the island to inoculate the people. “Health staff reached remotest places travelling by Land, by Sea and by air, they trekked through Dense jungles and waded through crocodile infested waters often risking personal safety for the greater good,” it said. 


Vaccination drive on the island was started on January 16, 2021 with the frontline and health workers receiving the vaccine initially. 


Total cases of Covid-19 in Andaman and Nicobar was 7,701. The island reported one new case in the last 24 hours whereas one patient was discharged and zero death. The new case was detected during contact tracing, reported PTI. Total number of patients discharged till date was 7,570 while 129 people succumbed to the infection. Total active cases on the island were 2.
