As per reports, Singh was admitted to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he passed away earlier in day. Singh's family was said to be by his side during his last times. The veteran politician has been battling health issues since past many years.
In 2013, the former Rajya Sabha MP had suffered a kidney failure and was again rushed to New Delhi's Fortis hospital in 2015 after he complained of uneasiness and pain.
Earlier in the day, Singh took to micro-blogging site Twitter and extended Eid greetings to his followers and also paid tributes to freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his death anniversary.
Amar Singh, who was a former general secretary of the Samajwadi Party, was once known to be very close aid of party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav. However, in 2010, Amar Singh resigned from all party posts and was then expelled by the SP leadership.
Despite illness, Singh was significantly active on social media. On March 22, he posted a short video from his hospital bed where he appealed all his followers to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the fight against Coronavirus.
Soon after the news of Singh's said demise came to lights, condolences started pouring on social media. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and expressed his grief.
"Amar Singh Ji was an energetic public figure. In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his friends & family. Om Shanti," PM tweeted.
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took to Twitter and expressed his grief. Saddened to know about the passing away of senior leader and MP Amar Singh, Rajnath Singh tweeted in Hindi.
"My friend and colleague in #rajyasabha #Parliament #AmarSingh passed away.Pained and saddened by this unfortunate news.He always fought with oddities of life as he did fight for his own life from hospital bed,till his last breath.Condolences to his wife and children Om Shanti," former Union Minister and BJP leader Suresh Prabhu tweeted.
Amar Singh was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time in 1996 from Uttar Pradesh and retained his seat in 2003. On January 6, 2010, Singh resigned from all the posts of Samajwadi Party and was later expelled from the party by its chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, on February 2, 2010.
