New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi finally met the victim of Alwar gang-rape case and her family on Thursday, almost twenty days after the horrific crime took place in Rajasthan district. Gandhi was accompanied by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, Deputy CM Sachin Pilot and Congress national general secretary Avinash Pandey. After meeting the victim, Gandhi said that the unfortunate incident was not a "political issue" for him but an "emotional one," and that justice would be delivered at the earliest.

“Soon after I heard about the incident, I spoke to Ashok Gehlot Ji. This is not a political issue for me. I met the victim's family and they have sought justice which will be done. Action will be taken against culprits,” he was quoted as saying by ANI.

The Gandhi scion, along with CM Ashok Gehlot and Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, were slated to meet the Alwar gang rape case victim and her family members in Thanagazi on Wednesday but the meeting got postponed due to bad weather.

On April 26, the victim along with her husband were stopped, abducted and dragged to an isolated place where the woman was raped. The alleged rapists also filmed the act and uploaded that on YouTube. The couple approached the police, which allegedly did not act citing lack of manpower and time due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

An FIR was lodged on May 2 and the accused circulated a video clip of the crime on May 4.

Subsequently, five accused, who allegedly raped the woman, and the one who shot and circulated the video clip, have been arrested.

The incident triggered widespread protests in Alwar, Jaipur, Dausa and nearby areas and a protest march led by BJP's Rajya Sabha MP Kirori Lal Meena had turned violent in Dausa on Tuesday, leaving over half a dozen people injured.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BSP supremo Mayawati and other leaders have condemned the incident.

PM Modi and Mayawati were also locked in war of words over the incident after PM questioned her why she did not withdraw support to the ruling Congress in wake of the incident. In response, Mayawati charged the prime minister with doing "dirty politics" over the gang rape of a "Dalit" girl in Alwar and demanded his resignation for incidents of  atrocities on scheduled castes in the past.
