New Delhi: The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday granted bail to veteran Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan in connection with a land grabbing case.

However, the SP leader will still remain in jail as the judgement in two cases against him are reserved, news agency ANI reported.

He is currently lodged in Sitapur Jail in Uttar Pradesh. Khan has been lodged in jail since February 2020 for a number of cases registered against him.

Azam Khan was arrested along with his son and wife in several cases of land grabbing, encroachment and providing fake birth certificates.

Azam Khan contested the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from the Rampur seat. Azam Khan has been an MLA from this assembly seat nine times.

From this seat, he was elected MLA for the first time in the year 1980. In the 2017 elections, Azam had got 102100, or about 47.74 per cent of the votes.

In January, Azam Khan approached the Supreme Court seeking interim bail to campaign in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. However, the top court refused interim bail to the Samajwadi Party (SP) leader.
