New Delhi: The Government of India has decided to provide ‘Z’ category security to All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Assaduddin Owaisi, reported news agency PTI.

The decision came after Owaisi’s convoy was attacked in Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut on Thursday as two persons fired at his car. Owaisi was returning to Delhi from UP after campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections.

Around three to four rounds of bullets were fired upon his car at Chhajarsi toll plaza when he was returning from an election-related event in the Kithaur district of Meerut.

Owaisi wrote about the incident on Twitter saying, “Bullets were fired on my vehicle near Chhajarsi toll plaza. Four rounds were fired. There were three-four people, all of them fled leaving behind the weapon on the scene. My vehicle got punctured, but I left from there in another vehicle. We are all safe.”

Owaisi also posted pictures of his car with bullet holes on the side. After the incident, the Uttar Pradesh police arrested two persons who claimed to have carried out the attack after allegedly being hurt by Owaisi’s ‘Anti-Hindu’ statements.

Deepak Bhuker, SP Hapur, told news agency ANI, “2 persons have been arrested for firing on AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi's convoy while he was returning to Delhi after campaigning in Uttar Pradesh. The investigation is underway. They carried out the act upon being hurt by Owaisi's anti-Hindu statements.”

Earlier, Owaisi told ANI, “Police have informed me that weapons have been recovered and one shooter has been taken into custody.”
