The fire engulfed Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad. The victims include five men and three women, who were being treated at the ICU ward of the COVID-19 designated hospital. The hospital housed 40 other patients who were rescued and shifted to a civic hospital in Ahmedabad itself. The fire broke out around 3.30 am on Thursday and has been doused, however, the cause of the fire has not been ascertained.
"Eight coronavirus patients admitted in the ICU ward of Shrey Hospital have died due to the fire, which has been doused,” an official of the Ahmedabad Fire Department was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.
Gujarat has over 66,000 coronavirus patients and over 2500 fatalities. On Wednesday, 1,073 fresh cases were reported.
PM expresses grief, announces ex-gratia
PM Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 Lakhs each from Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of the deceased. Rs 50,000 to be given to those injured due to the fire.
CM Vijay Rupani orders probe
CM Vijay Rupani has ordered a probe in the incident of fire at Shrey Hospital in Ahmedabad. Sangeeta Singh, Additional Chief Secretary (Home Department) will be leading the probe. The CM has also ordered for a report within 3 days, CMO has said.
