'There Should Be Debate': Adhir Chowdhury Writes To Speaker Over Rahul's LS Disqualification

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday wrote a letter to Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla demanding a debate in Parliament on the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi as MP following his conviction in a defamation case. "There should be a debate in the Parliament as to ascertain the fact that whether our leader Shri Rahul Gandhi ji has been awarded disproportionate punishment which smacks of cognitive dissonance or equality of law is meted out to all the elected members whosoever," Chowdhury said in the letter.

Meanwhile, Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Shashi Tharoor also questioned the exclusion of Rahul Gandhi.

After attending a seminar on "Protection and Upliftment of the Constitution" held by the Madhya Pradesh unit of the All-India Professional Congress in Indore, the two leaders were speaking to the media.

Nath mentioned that Gandhi's criminal defamation trial was held in Gujarat over a statement he made four years ago in Karnataka.

The Madhya Pradesh Congress chief stated that he wanted to inquire of the seminar's lawyers regarding whether the action taken against Gandhi was "bona fide or mala fide," or taken with good or bad intent.

According to Tharoor, Gandhi mentioned three to four individuals in his speech at the election rally in Karnataka, but this did not mean that everyone with the surname "Modi" is a thief.

"Both the interpretations of Gandhi's statement should have been understood, and if at all any minimum punishment was to be awarded, he could have been given a warning that he should not repeat such action and the case should have been closed," he said.

However, Tharoor stated that Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from serving as an MP because the court imposed a maximum sentence of two years in prison on him for the offense. He deemed this to be a very unfortunate development.

Additionally, the Thiruvananthapuram Member of Parliament stated that the disputed statement was made at an election rally where a lot of things are said.

“People say many things in an election speech. You all know what the BJP has said about me or Kamal Nath during elections,” he said.
