The Jallianwala Bagh massacre which took place in Amritsar over Baisakhi in April 1919 is undoubtedly  one of the darkest incidents in our country's  freedom struggle against the mighty Colonial British rule. 2019 marks the hundredth year since one of the most dastardly events occurred  as part of our national movement to attain freedom against the Britishers.

In a noble bid to mark the centenary of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and pay tribute to the martyred, ABP News shall be organised a torch-lit march across Patiala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar & Amritsar on April 10, 11, 12 & 13 respectively.

ABP News launched its campaign with a cause from the historical city of Patiala on Wednesday to make the citizens cognizant of the sacrifices made by our brave-hearts to gain the much cherished independence.

The activities undertaken by the ABP team comprised of road shows, torch relay, street plays, oath Ceremonies & pledges taken from crowds on a wall. There was an in-depth coverage of the campaign all across Patiala city in key locations like BM Khalsa School, Patiala Bus Stand, Mall Road Market & Omaxe Mall Patiala.

The  Jallianwala Bagh massacre which led to hundreds of Indian freedom fighters attaining martyrdom happened on April 13, 1919 when troops of the British Indian Army under the command of Colonel Dyer fired machine guns at a crowd of people holding a pro-independence demonstration at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar. The civilians had assembled for a peaceful protest to condemn the arrest and deportation of two national leaders, Satya Pal and Saifuddin Kitchlew. Raja Ram has argued however, that the Proclamation was ineffective, the crowd formed in deliberate defiance and the event signals a beginning of Indian nationalism.
