New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee has been reappointed as the party’s national general secretary.

Senior TMC leader Partha Chatterjee said Abhishek Banerjee has been reappointed as national general secretary of the party’s new office bearers’ committee, PTI reported.

Earlier last week, the TMC chief had dissolved all existing posts in the party.

She had formed a 20-member national working committee after holding a meeting with some senior TMC leaders at her Kalighat residence in Kolkata.

Amit Mitra, Partha Chatterjee, Subrata Bakshi, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Bulichik Bariko, Chandrima Bhattacharjee, Sukhendu Shekhar Roy, Ashima Patra, Moloy Patra, Anubrata Mandal, Rajiv Tripathi and Gautam Deb were among those named in this committee.

Besides, Yashwant Sinha, who joined the TMC earlier in March last year, was also included in this committee. Notably, the TMC veterans like Derek O'Brien and Sougata Ray were not included.

The announcement came amid rumours that Abhishek Banerjee is likely to step down from all organisational responsibilities allegedly because of differences with some senior TMC leaders.

Responding to a poser whether this is an effort to clip Abhishek Banerjee’s wings, a senior TMC leader said: “The Chief Minister wants to establish direct control because the people only give votes in her name.”

Mamata Banerjee was re-elected as the chairperson of the party.

“Mamata Banerjee was re-elected as the chairperson of the party recently where she announced a small committee to look after party affairs. Today (Saturday), a meeting of that committee was held where she announced our new national working committee,” Partha Chatterjee told reporters earlier on February 12, news agency ANI reported.
