New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale jolted the Andaman and Nicobar islands on Wednesday morning.


The medium intensity earthquake occurred at 6:09 am and had its epicentre in the Andaman islands, news agency PTI reported citing the National Centre for Seismology.
The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago is prone to frequent earthquakes.

On Tuesday morning as well, the archipelago was rocked by an earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter Scale, news agencies reported.

The quake struck at around 2:04 am and was situated at a depth of 10 kilometres, the agency said.

There were no reports of any casualties, injuries or damage to property. No tsunami warning has been issued.

A total of 20 medium intensity quakes had jolted the region on April 1, however, without causing damage to life and property.
