4 Detained For Stone Pelting, Torching Police Vehicles In Maharashtra's Sambhajinagar; 10 Held So Far

Police detain four more persons for torching police vehicles and pelting stones in Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) during violent clashes.

Sambhajinagar Violence: Police have detained four more persons for torching police vehicles and pelting stones in connection with the Sambhajinagar (Aurangabad) violence. The accused were detained on Friday night and the process to arrest them is underway. Police said that two of the four detained are main conspirators who set the police vehicles on fire and pelted stones during the arson.

Till now, police have arrested ten persons in connection with the case.

DCP Shilwant Nandedkar told ANI, "Two more accused arrested, a total of 10 people arrested so far pertaining to clash that broke out between two groups in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar's Kiradpura area."

PTI reported citing Raj Bhavan sources that Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais on Friday asked Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in a telephonic conversation to ensure that strict action was taken against those involved in an attack on a police station in the city.

At least 12 persons including ten policemen were injured on Thursday after a mob turned violent following a clash between two groups near a Ram temple in Kiradpura locality of Sambhajinagar. The mob of around 500 people threw stones and petrol-filled bottles when the police tried to control the situation.

As per the report, one person succumbed to injuries during the day. 13 vehicles were torched during the violent clashes in the city.

Reacting to the incident, leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar said political parties, civil society and citizens must work towards ensuring peace in Sambhajinagar.

“An unfortunate incident has taken place in Sambhajinagar. There is a need to make efforts to ensure that a peaceful environment prevails. Though I am the Leader of Opposition, I will not make any statement which will deteriorate the atmosphere,” Pawar told reporters in Pune, as quoted by PTI.

Pawar said he has urged people from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to maintain communal harmony and beware of any attempts by miscreants to incite communal sentiments.

Several states witnessed severe clashes on Ram Navami on Thursday and Friday. West Bengal and Bihar saw violence on both days while fresh incidents of clashes were reported from Jharkhand late Friday night.
