36-Foot-Long Carcass Of Endangered Whale Species Washes Up On Bengal's Mandarmani Beach

A 36-foot-long whale carcass was found in Mandarmani, West Bengal. The body bore signs of injury.

Kolkata: A massive 36-foot-long whale washed up on the shore at East Midnapore district, West Bengal. The carcass of the mammal which is listed in the critically endangered species list was found in Mandarmani a popular tourist spot 150 km away from Kolkata. The reason for death has not been determined yet, but according to a report by NDTV the head of the dead whale lay in a pool of blood. The news has gone viral in social media and many have shown concern for environmental degradation. Whales are in the list of critically endangered species according to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in India. Last month a 40-feet-long whale has washed up at Gahirmatha marine sanctuary area in Odisha's Kendrapara district. Earlier this month the carcass of a sperm whale has washed ashore on Atrankarai, Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu. The most common causes for unexplained deaths of marine wildlife are collision with fishing vessels such as fishing trawlers and or getting entangled in fishing gears.
