Parliament Session: The first session of Parliament or the 17th Lok Sabha has begun from Monday. During the Parliament session, the passage of the Union budget and key legislation such as triple talaq are likely to be on top of the to-do list for the government.

The inaugural session of the new Lok Sabha started with the swearing in of its members. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the first MP to take oath in the 17th Lok Sabha which met for the first time on Monday after the declaration of the general elections results on May 23. All the members were administered the oath by the protem Speaker Virendra Kumar.

As per the parliamentary rules, Narendra Modi took the take oath first as the leader of the House. The Council of Ministers followed the Prime Minister in taking the oath.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Home Minister Amit Shah also took oath as LS members.



Before entering the Lower House Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media. PM Modi at the Parliament said, "We are working to fulfil people's aspirations. New friends will join today and they will bring new energy. We value the Opposition and their role. The Opposition should play an active role in Parliament."

W‭hile stressing upon the role of an active Opposition, PM Modi said that Opposition’s role is important and they need not bother about their numbers in the Parliament. “The role of an active Opposition is important. Opposition need not bother about their numbers. I hope they will speak actively and participate in house proceedings.”

Just before the first session of the Parliament after the 2019 polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to welcome the new members of parliament.


Earlier in the day, BJP MP Virendra Kumar was appointed as the protem speaker of the 17th Lok Sabha. He is a seven-time MP from Tikamgarh in Madhya Pradesh. He administered oath to all the MPs and enable the House to elect a permanent Speaker.

A day before Parliament session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an all-party meeting and also invited presidents of all parties, who have an MP either in the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha, to a meeting on June 19.
