'112% More Deaths Occurred In Mumbai In April 2021 As Compared To 2020', Reveals RTI
Mumbai has recorded the highest number of deaths in April in the last 4 years. This year in April, 112% more deaths have been recorded in the city.
Mumbai: More than 112% deaths have occurred in Mumbai in the month of April this year. In fact, this figure has crossed the number of deaths in the city in the last four years this month. At the same time, mortality data has raised concerns over the actual toll of Covid 19.
The civic corporation data obtained through an RTI application shows that in April 2021, 4,484 deaths occurred due to all causes, while in April 2020 the death toll was at 89% with 7,648 deaths. At the same time, the number of deaths in April 2019 was 6,572. In April 2018, a total of 6,719 were recorded, and 6,234 deaths were recorded in April 2017.
There has been no significant change in the number of deaths in January and February this year as compared to the previous years. At the same time, an increase of 12% was seen in March 2021 compared to 2020. The records for May and June are still being collated. In the survey conducted on the deaths in April this year, it has been found that the total number of people who died of Covid and without Covid is 6,200.
4 Maximum number of deaths occurred in April
As per information received, the second wave of coronavirus was at its peak in Mumbai in April 2021, and 9,000 cases were registered daily for the first three weeks. This year, the highest number of Covid cases were reported on April 4, with 11,206 cases. However, according to BMC data, the deaths due to Covid increased in late April, before peaking in mid-May.
Deaths due to of causes increased the mortality rate
Avinash Supe, head of the death audit committee of Covid, said that it is a challenge to assess the actual Covid toll. However, it cannot be denied that there has been a significant increase in all-cause deaths.
