10 things to know about a Hindu girl's 'forced conversion' in Pakistan

Islamabad:  The abduction and conversion of a minor Hindu girl in Pakistan has sparked anger among the Hindu community. 

 

10 things to know about the uproar 

• Report say 16-year-old Ravita Meghwar was kidnapped by men from the Syed community of Wanharo village near Nagarparkar area of the district on June 6th.

 

• Ravita along with her 'husband' "husband" Nawaz Ali Shah interacted with journalists in Umerkot saying she embraced Islam after eloping with Shah there by marrying him wilfully.

 

• However, her father Satram Das Meghwar alleged that t influential members of the Syed community had kidnapped his daughter. He also said the family was given sleeping pills.

 

• Some of the family members including her father and mother were reportedly admitted to a rural health centre in Islamkot in an unconscious state.

 

• Nawaz Ali Shah reportedly was a local youth who used to tease the girl.

 

• Her father accused the local police of not pursuing the matter of her conversion seriously.

 

• A report from Pakistan's daily 'Dawn' said that police teams from Tharparkar and Umerkot districts did raid various villages to trace the girl, but to no avail.

 

• The girl says she needs protection for both herself and her husband.

 

• According to the marriage certificate issued by the Islamic preacher, "The girl is eighteen years old, can marry the person of her choice and her Islamic name is Gulnar".

 

• PPP Senator Gianchand and MPA Dr. Khatu Mal Jeewan has reportedly taken strong notice of the incident and directed police officials to make efforts to immediately recover the girl.
