Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of India's 78th Independence Day.

The banned ULFA (I) on Thursday claimed to have planted bombs at 24 places across Assam. Following the claims, security forces sprung into action and sent teams to look into the matter. A senior police officer said bomb disposal squads have been rushed to all the places mentioned by ULFA (I), but there is no report of recovery of any bomb or explosive.
In an email purportedly from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) (Independent) to media houses, including news agency PTI, the terror outfit asserted that the bombs did not blast due to "technical failure".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his 11th Independence Day speech on Thursday. During his 98 minutes speech, the Prime Minister spoke on several issues including atrocities against women, natural calamities, Defence among others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Thursday, in his address to the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on the 78th Independence Day expressed his concern over the increasing frequency of natural disasters in recent years and offered his sympathies to the affected families. "This year and for the past few years, due to natural calamity, our concerns have been mounting," the Prime Minister said.
"Several people have faced devastating losses, including the loss of loved ones, property damage, and significant financial burdens. The nation too has suffered losses. Today, I want to express my deepest sympathies to those affected and assure them that the nation is standing by their side through in their hour of crisis," PM Modi said.
PM Narendra Modi says, "...I would like to express my pain once again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we will have to think seriously about the atrocities against women that are happening - there is outrage against this in the country. I can feel this outrage. The country, society, State Governments will have to take this seriously. Speedy investigation of crimes against women, those executing these monstrous deeds be awarded strict punishment at the earliest - this is important to instil confidence in society. I would also like to say that when rapes and incidents of atrocities on women occur, it is widely discussed. But when a person of such monstrous tendency is punished, it is not seen in news, but restricted to a corner. It is the need of the hour, that extensive discussion on those receiving punishment be held so that those committing this sin understand that this leads to hanging. I think it is very important to instil this fear."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi continued with his tradition of wearing colourful turbans for Independence Day as he addressed the nation from the Red Fort on Thursday.
For the 11th consecutive year, PM Modi embraced a distinctive sartorial choice, donning a multi-hued Rajasthani-style turban featuring shades of yellow, green, and orange.
PM Modi says, "We are becoming self-reliant in the defence sector. Today, we have our own identity in defence equipment manufacturing. India is emerging as a defence manufacturing hub."
On the 78th Independence Day, PM Modi urges all levels of government, from panchayat to central government, to work on improving ease of living at a mission mode.
During his Independence Day 2024 speech, PM Modi announced, "In the next five years, 75,000 new seats will be created in medical colleges in India. Viksit Bharat 2047 should also be 'Swasth Bharat' and for this, we have started Rashtriya Poshan Mission."
PM Modi says, "For working women, maternity leave has been increased from 12 weeks to 26 weeks. We not only just respect women, we not only take decisions for her sensitively, we make decisions to ensure that the government does not become a hindrance in the requirements of the mother to mak her child a quality citizen..."

Speaking on the space sector, PM Modi says, "The space sector is an important aspect. We have done many reforms in this sector. Today, many startups are entering this sector. Space sector which is becoming vibrant is an essential element towards making India a powerful nation. We are focusing and giving strength to this sector with a long-term idea."

PM Modi said, "In the last 10 years, 10 crore women joined women self-help groups. 10 crore women are becoming financially independent. When women become financially independent they become part of the decision-making system in a household leading to social change...Till now, 9 lakh crores have been given to self-help groups in the country."

Every year India celebrates August 15th as its Independence Day, remembering the day the country was freed from the clutches of British colonialism after over 200 years. This year too, India is all set to religiously celebrate the big day with great fervour, marking the 78th Independence Day to honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters and seveal others who laid down their lives to get India its long due freedom.
Ahead of the Independence Day, security was tightened across the nation with over 10,000 policemen, snipers, and facial recognition cameras deployed in Delhi to maintain law and order.
Security camps were also set up in 13 villages in Chhattisgarh's Maoist-hit Bastar region where the Tricolour will be hoisted for the first time today.
Over 10,000 police personnel and 3,000 traffic police personnel have been deployed in Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unfurl the national flag at the Red Fort for the 11th consecutive year.
"Snipers, elite SWAT commandos, kite catchers and sharpshooters will be positioned at strategic locations for the security of the prime minister and other VVIP guests," a senior officer said. Mock drills were conducted in VVIP areas on August 14.
Besides this, around 700 AI-based facial recognition CCTV cameras were installed in central and New Delhi ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
The high-resolution pan-tilt-zoom features of these cameras enable the identification of a person from a distance.
All borders of the national capital from Uttar Pradesh-Delhi and Haryana-Delhi have been sealed for the entry of commercial heavy vehicles movements.
The vehicles will only be allowed to enter the national capital after being checked properly.
Delhi Traffic Police had issued an advisory on Thursday, informing the public about route closures, alternative routes, and diversions around the Red Fort.
18 Delhi Police personnel will be awarded the President's Police Medal on August 15. While two of them will receive the medal for their distinguished service, 16 others will be awarded for their meritorious service.
President Droupadi Murmu had also addressed the nation on the eve of the 78th Independence Day.
