Independence Day 2018: On the midnight of August 15, 1947, India gained its liberty and became a free country. It was then free India's first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous "Tryst with Destiny" speech. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom,” these were the words delivered by Nehru.

Independence Day is an annual National Festival in India. On this day, we celebrate our freedom. The day is marked important as India gained its freedom from the British Empire on 15th August 1947. Hence, this day is very important for the citizens of India. It is only because of the tireless efforts and countless sacrifices of our countrymen that we are able to breathe the fragrance of free air.

On this day, people across India are reminded of the meaning of Independence - that it marked the start of a new era of deliverance from the British colonialism that took place in India for more than 200 years.

• The celebrations begin with the President’s address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day (14th August), followed by prime minister’s speech from the ramparts of Lal Quila in Delhi.
• On 15 August, the prime minister hoists the Indian flag on the ramparts of the historical site Red Fort in Delhi. Later in his speech, he lays down the vision for the country to proceed further to the path of development, prosperity, and harmony.
• The day is celebrated as a national holiday throughout the country with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural events.
• Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programmes take place in governmental and non-governmental institutions throughout the country.
• The Indian national anthem, "Jana Gana Mana", is sung.
• The chief ministers of various states hoist the flag at designated venues.
• The day is also celebrated in schools throughout the country with cultural events. It gains a significant space and is placed at the top.
