Upgrading smaller diesel cars to comply with the new norms is likely to make them more expensive by around Rs 1 lakh. This could lead to diesel cars losing their edge over their petrol counterparts, even for those who cover a lot of distance every day.
Taking into account the above mentioned costs, the price between the E variant of the petrol Venue and the E variant of the diesel Venue would increase from Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 2.05 lakh.
However, Hyundai also offers the Venue with a 1.0-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine which is more expensive than the naturally-aspirated 1.2-litre petrol variant. The 1.0-litre S variant of the Venue is Rs 24,000 more expensive than the same variant with a diesel engine. Once BS6 norms come into play, this difference will increase to around Rs 1 lakh. In such a scenario, diesel cars will be able to justify their costs, compared to petrol cars.
Kia Motor, a sister-company of Hyundai, will equip its upcoming SUV with a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Going forward, this could be the only diesel engine used by Hyundai and Kia for their smaller cars.
