New Delhi: Changing Islamic names of different places has been the hallmark of the BJP government each time it has come to power. The latest row is over renaming the iconic city, Hyderabad. During the campaigning for the  Hyderabad municipal elections, BJP heavyweights such as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and even Home Minister Amit Shah talked about renaming Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar.

According to ANI during a rally in Hyderabad, Adityanath said, “Some people were asking me if Hyderabad can be renamed as Bhagyanagar. I said, why not? I told them that we renamed Faizabad and Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj after BJP came into power in UP. Then why Hyderabad can’t be renamed as Bhagyanagar?”

The name Bhagyanagar according to media reports refers to the small Bhagyalaxmi temple located near the Charminar which some believe predates the construction of the Charminar. This claim has been refuted and since the 1960s the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has maintained that the temple is in fact an encroachment.

But political leaders remain unfazed and this time, Shah and other leaders started their election campaigning, with a visit to the temple. Recently, Baba Ramdev also showed his support for renaming the city.

Here's a list of places that have been renamed so far

Allahabad- The name which dates back to the 16th century was changed to Prayagraj which refers to the Hindu pilgrimage site there.

Mughalserai- In 2018, the British-era railway station which is one of the busiest stations in North India was changed to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay station. The RSS leader is considered as a spiritual guide for the party.

Aurangzeb Road: In 2015 the road named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb was renamed after 'Missile Man' of India Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam.

Villages with Muslim names in Rajasthan- In 2018 several villages in Rajasthan were changed by then Vasundhara Raje-led state government. Some of the villages include Ismailpur village (Jhunjhunu district) to Pichanwa Khurd, Miyan ka Bara (Barmer district), to Mahesh Nagar
