Just like India, the mass popular video-sharing app has garnered a lot of attention from the US lawmakers and the administration due to national security concerning data collection.
As per news agency AFP, US officials on Friday ordered a ban on downloads of the popular Chinese-owned mobile applications WeChat and TikTok on the grounds that they threaten national security. The move comes among rising US China tensions, and an effort put by Trump administration to engineer the sale of the musical app TikTok to American companies.
In the month of August itself Trump administration had made an announcement that the apps would be banned by mid September. Trump had said of banning transactions with China’s ByteDance, owner of video-sharing app TikTok, and Tencent, operator of the WeChat app, starting in 45 days.
It is also noteworthy that Paytm which has huge Chinese investments, was removed from Google's Play Store following the company's new policy guidelines which are going to come into effect properly from October 1.
US had supported India's app ban move:
The United States had shown support towards India's decision of banning Chinese application citing security threat and data sharing concerns. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday welcomed New Delhi's decision saying it will "boost India's integrity and national security." Republican leader and Former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has also praised India’s decision to ban Chinese Apps in the wake of the violent clash of troops at the Galwan Valley, Ladakh.
