Former Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan Admitted To Hospital, In ICU

Due to ill-health, the 98-year-old veteran CPI leader has stepped down as the chairperson of the state administrative reforms commission

Chennai: Former Kerala Chief Minister and Veteran CPI (M) leader, VS Achuthanandan, was admitted to a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday and is being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He was diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis and is being monitored in the ICU, said Sree Utharadom Thirunal Hospital's medical superintendent.

“He has been diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis followed by dyselectrolemia and altered renal functions. He is closely being monitored in the ICU,” said the hospital bulletin, that was released on Monday.

Due to ill-health, the 98-year-old veteran CPI leader has stepped down as the chairperson of the state administrative reforms commission. Two years ago the CPI leader had a stroke and since then he has been inactive in state politics. Achuthanandan has later shifted his base to his hometown in the Alapuzha district. 

Entering politics in the year 1938, Achutanandan has a strong in state's political front. He was the oldest CM in the state when he assumed office in 2006, at the age of 83. He served the Kerala Chief Minister from 2006-2011 and he became the chairman of administrative reforms in the state with cabinet rank in 2016 and he served till earlier this year. He was the former three-time Leader of Opposition in Kerala.
