Cyclone Tauktae HIGHLIGHTS: Cyclonic Storm To Weaken Into Deep Depression In Next 6 Hours, Says IMD
Cyclone Tauktae HIGHLIGHTS, May 18: After hitting Mumbai yesterday afternoon, Cyclone Tauktae with winds gusting up to 185 km per hour started making landfall on the Gujarat coast on Monday night. IMD informed that the storm which had hit Gujarat coast in Saurashtra between Diu and Una around 9 pm, ended around 12 am on Tuesday. The storm forced the evacuation of over 1.5 lakh people in Gujarat and left two barges with 410 people on board adrift in the Arabian Sea.
As many as 13 people were killed in Gujarat as cyclone Tauktae pummelled parts of the state and left behind a trail of destruction along the coast, uprooting electric poles, trees and damaging thousands of houses and roads, officials said on Tuesday.
Even as Tauktae's intensity weakened, it left behind a trail of destruction with as many as 13 people losing their lives in different parts of Gujarat, including Bhavnagar, Rajkot, Patan, Amreli and Valsad, officials said.

Tauktae has now weakened into a "cyclonic storm" and will gradually become a "deep depression" as it moves northwards, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Deputy Chief of Naval Staff in a statement said: This is one of the most challenging search & rescue ops I’ve seen in the last 4 decades. 4 INS are on site. Main ops pertains to searching & rescuing 261 people from Afcons Barge P305 which sank about 60km away from Mumbai yesterday.

Search continues for 127 people who were onboard Barge 305 sunk at Bombay Hight after severe storm hit the coast on Monday evening. The barge had at least 273 people on board.
Some 127 people were missing Tuesday after a vessel adrift off Mumbai's coast sank during Cyclone Tauktae, the Indian navy said as two ships and helicopters were deployed to assist in the search, AFP reported.

Patients from a COVID care centre in Gujarat's Vadodara were shifted to hospitals, yesterday. Nodal Officer Sheetal Mistry said, "In view of IMD's warning for the severe storm, we are shifting COVID-19 patients from various facilities to hospitals."
