Cyclone Tauktae HIGHLIGHTS, May 19: Cyclone Tauktae weakened into a Deep Depression and lay centred over Saurashtra on Tuesday night. The storm battered parts of Gujarat and left behind a trail of destruction along the coast, uprooting electric poles and trees besides damaging several houses and roads. The IMD said that Cyclone Tauktae will stretch from Rajasthan to Haryana, and due to this, east and west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, the Delhi-NCR region will witness moderate rain today. PM Modi is likely to visit Gujarat and Diu today to take stock of the situation and damage due to Cyclone Tauktae. During his visit, the PM will conduct an aerial survey of several areas.
Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has set up a high-level committee to enquire into sequence of events leading to stranding of ONGC vessels in cyclone. Several ONGC vessels with over 600 people on board, were stranded in offshore areas amid the cyclone.
As many as 46 people were killed in the incidents related to cyclone Tauktae in Gujarat which made landfall on Monday night and left a trail of destruction before weakening and moving to Rajasthan, officials said on Wednesday.
Of 46 deaths, 15 were reported from Amreli district in Saurashtra region, among the worst affected by the cyclone that crossed the state coast as an "extremely severe cyclonic storm" on Monday night.
The NCP, which is one of the constituents of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), on Wednesday wondered whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi's aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas in Gujarat and Diu amounted to discrimination against Maharashtra which too was affected by the cyclonic storm.
Taking a dig, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut said the PM was not conducting an aerial survey of the cyclone-hit areas in Maharashtra because he knew that the state is led by a strong chief minister unlike in his home state Gujarat.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced a financial assistance of Rs 1,000 crore for immediate relief measures in the areas hit by cyclone Tauktae in Gujarat, an official release said.
He also announced Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia compensation for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured in cyclone-related incidents in all states affected by Tauktae.

Prime Minister Modi had on Monday called up Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani over the phone and sought details of preparation by the state government to deal with the cyclone. He had also called up Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Daman & Diu Lieutenant Governor Praful Patel regarding preparation and response to deal with the cyclone.

After creating havoc in north-northeast wards, the storm is expected to bring in heavy rains in several parts of Northwest India. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that Cyclone Tauktae will stretch from Rajasthan to Haryana, and due to this, east and west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, the Delhi-NCR region will witness moderate rain today.
