Around 857 patients succumbed to coronavirus infection in the past 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 39,795.
According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 2,14,84,402 samples have been tested till August 4 with 6,19,652 samples being tested on Tuesday.
The top most five states affected by coronavirus include Maharashtra (4,57,956), Tamil Nadu (268,285), Andhra Pradesh (1,76,333), Karnataka (1,45,830) and Delhi (1,39,156).
As the world is racing to find an effective vaccine, India has three vaccine candidates which are in different phases of the clinical study, top ICMR scientist (Prof) Balram Bhargava informed. "So at the present moment, we have three Indian vaccine candidates which are in different phases of a clinical study. Studies for Phase 1 and 2 are to determine the safety and very early efficacy."
Top political leaders infected with the virus include Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and Karti Chidabaram.
Globally, around 254,122 new cases worldwide in the past 24 hours as per the Worldometer. As many as 18,691,510 people around the world have been diagnosed with Covid-19. While more than 11,908,712 have recovered, 703,360 have died so far.
