New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation on Friday, announced the withdrawal of the three farm laws that have been embroiled in controversy for nearly a year. The Congress described the Central Government's decision as a victory against injustice and arrogance.
The party national spokesperson Randeep Surjewala in a press conference said that the farmers' fight for the last one year has been a success and that the BJP's defeat is the victory of the country.
Randeep Surjewala said, "The farmers had filed petitions before the Modi government against all the three new black agricultural laws, but they only received torture in return. The Modi government resorted to lathicharge on farmers, dug up Delhi borders and ordered for farmers to be physically assaulted.'' "Not only that, the agitating farmers were called terrorists and naxalites. They were called agitators," the Congress national spokesperson said.
Surjewala further said, "700 farmers were martyred during the agitation against agricultural laws and the son of the Minister of State for Home Affairs along with his assistants trampled the farmers under his car at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh."
"The Modi government has admitted its crime today. Now it's time to determine the punishment for the Modi government. The BJP has started fearing defeat in next year's assembly elections in five states including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab.''
Demanding an apology from the Prime Minister for the families of all the farmers who lost their lives during the agitation, the Congress raised five questions before the government.
"What is the roadmap of providing minimum support price to the farmers? What is the limit for rolling back the hike in excise duty of diesel? What is the roadmap to double the income of farmers? When is the government planning to take back GST implemented on farm implements," Randeep Surjewala asked in the press conference.
