The Yaris is a midsize sedan, while the Creta is a compact SUV. But which of the two would suit you better? Let’s find out
Priced from Rs 9.43 lakh to Rs 15.03 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the Creta not only competes with the likes of the Renault Captur and the Maruti S-Cross, but it also takes on some midsize sedans that fall in a similar price bracket. One such sedan is the Toyota Yaris, which is priced in the range of Rs 8.75 lakh to Rs 14.07 lakh. Let’s see how these two similarly priced cars fare against each other on paper.
Before going into details, here are the basic differences:
Toyota Yaris |
Hyundai Creta |
A midsize sedan: With the launch of the Yaris, Toyota entered the midsize sedan space in India in 2018. The Yaris’ cabin is focussed on pampering occupants with comfort and features, however, it lacks rear space when compared to its rivals. The Yaris has a rated boot space of 476 litres, which can be expanded to accommodate more luggage. |
A Compact SUV: The Creta is a 5-seater SUV, which recently received a midlife facelift in India. Unlike the Yaris, its cabin not only gets an array of feel-good features but can also seat five adults comfortably, thanks to its larger dimensions. The Creta’s cabin is wider than Yaris’ by 125mm. In fact, at 980mm, it also has 90mm more headroom than the Yaris. The Creta has a rated boot capacity of 400 litres. It can be expanded by folding the rear seats, but only in the SX AT variant. |
Safety is priority: The Yaris is the most well equipped car in its class, especially if you consider its lower variants. It offers various segment-first features like seven airbags, which are standard across the range, electrically adjustable driver seat, front parking sensors and roof-mounted AC vents. |
High on creature comforts: With the update, the Creta has received a bunch of new features. Out of which, the highlight has to be the electric sunroof, which is a first in the segment. However, it is available only in two variants: the top-spec SX(O) and the SX AT. |
Competition: Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Ciaz, Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid |

As far as the transmission is concerned, both the cars are available with a 6-speed MT and an automatic transmission, albeit of different types. While the Creta gets a 6-speed torque converter unit, the Yaris is offered with a 7-speed CVT with paddle shifters.
Variants and Features:
Hyundai Creta E vs Toyota Yaris J
Both the cars are available with petrol MT variants under the Rs 10 lakh bracket, however, the price difference between them is significant. While the Yaris’ J variant is priced at Rs 8.75 lakh, the Creta E is priced at Rs 9.43 lakh.

However, that doesn’t mean that the Creta is not a value for money pick. As a package, it includes most of the features you expect from an SUV of its size. So, for those, who want to opt for a vehicle with a higher seating position, the Creta is worth considering.
Hyundai Creta SX AT vs Toyota Yaris V CVT
While the Creta is available with an automatic transmission in the SX variant only, the Yaris gets the option of a CVT right from the base-spec J variant.

But again, the Yaris can’t be totally written off here for the additional safety it has to offer. So if you’re someone who’s looking for a car for the family, often hit the highways and, more importantly, are not particular about the body style, the Yaris can be your pick. If the Creta, with its sunroof and other additional features, has caught your fancy, go ahead, it’s still good value for money.

However, if we look at the value for money quotient, the second-to-top variants of both the cars are a sensible pick. But if you wish to choose one among the Yaris VX and Creta SX dual tone, we suggest you go for the top-spec Yaris VX.
