New Delhi: A 45-year-elderly woman and her son allegedly died by suicide due to a financial crisis at their home in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur district, police said on Wednesday.

The dead bodies of the mother-son duo were found hanging from the ceiling of a room in their house in Kalartarai village under Kota police station limits on Tuesday morning, said Kota police station SHO Dinesh Chandra.

Dinesh said that the bodies of Krishna Bai Manikpuri (40 years) and son Ashok Das Manikpuri (21 years) were found hanging from a "single rope" from the ceiling of the room.

The incident came to the light when the duo did not come out of the house.

“According to villagers, the woman worked as a maid in the village, while her son was a labourer. His husband stayed home due to his handicap," the official said as reported by news agency PTI.

According to the police, preliminary investigation and interrogation revealed that the husband lived with the woman and her son.

In a family of 3 members, only women worked. The woman's husband is handicapped. The son sometimes went to work. At the same time, his mother used to run the family alone. The woman had taken a loan, the installment of which had to be paid every week. In such a situation, there is a possibility that the mother-son may have committed suicide due to financial constraints.

Though the police have also not found any suicide note and a case has been registered in this connection and an investigation is underway, said the official.
