A Delhi-based lawyer filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking FIR against Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin for his remarks calling for the eradication of ‘Sanatana Dharma’, ANI reported. The application also seeks contempt of court action against Delhi and Chennai police for not registering suo motu FIR for hate speech in terms of the Supreme Court’s earlier order.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Assembly on Thursday announced a hike of Rs 40,000 per month in salaries of MLAs of the state, ANI reported.

INS Sumedha arrived at Port Alexandria, Egypt, on September 6, 2023, to participate in ‘Exercise BRIGHT STAR- 23’. Customs officials at the Hyderabad airport have arrested a passenger and an airport staff member for allegedly smuggling 933 grams of gold worth Rs 56.63 lakhs, authorities said on Thursday, as reported by news agency IANS. A senior Customs official said the accused were apprehended based on profiling.
"The accused passenger arrived at the Hyderabad airport from Dubai on Monday. Gold was discovered in his luggage. During inquiry, it was revealed that the gold was intended to be smuggled out with the assistance of airport staff," the official said. The seized gold was confiscated under the provisions of section 110 of the Customs Act and the passenger was detained under section 104 of the Customs Act.
Later, Customs officials also arrested the airport staff member.
Two students of Class 12 from a convent school were stabbed by a group of miscreants outside their school on Sadar Patel Marg in Civil Lines of Uttar Pradesh' Prayagraj, said officials, as reported by news agency IANS. The incident happened on Wednesday.
The injured students have been admitted to the SRN hospital where their condition was stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, other students and passersby thrashed one of the alleged attackers who was also admitted to the hospital. Police have detained three persons, including the prime accused, in connection with the incident.
The Ukrainian Parliament has approved a legislation to appoint Rustem Umerov as the country's new Defence Minister, lawmaker Yaroslav Zheleznyak said. Umerov's nomination, which was submitted by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was supported by 338 lawmakers in the 450-seat Assembly, Zheleznyak added on Wednesday in a post on Telegram.
Umerov, 41, served as the head of the country's main privatisation fund between September 2022 and September 2023, Xinhua news agency reported.
Four Pakistani soldiers and 12 terrorists were killed in a clash between government security forces and the terrorists in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a military statement said.
The clash occurred in Chitral district where a group of terrorists equipped with the latest weapons attacked two Pakistani military posts located closer to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, the military's media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday in the statement as quoted by Xinhua news agency report.
The security forces have inflicted heavy casualties on the terrorists, and the area is being combed to eliminate any other terrorists surviving the operation, the statement added.

Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's summit talks with the leaders of the 10-nation influential bloc in Jakarta on Thursday, a new initiative to boost India-ASEAN maritime security cooperation is expected to be unveiled, news agency PTI reported citing people familiar with the matter. PM Modi departed for Jakarta on Wednesday night to attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit. As the current Chair of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Indonesia is hosting the summits.
The ASEAN is regarded as one of the most powerful organisations in the region, with dialogue partners including the United States, China, Japan, and Australia. Shoring up India's trade and security ties with the ASEAN is likely to be the focus of Modi's engagement with leaders of the bloc.
