Incessant rains since last night, caused waterlogging and traffic snarls in several parts of Kerala on Friday, as reported by the news agency PTI. In the wake of continuous rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow alert warning in 10 districts-Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. Rains, accompanied by gusty winds lashed various parts of the state since Thursday night.
"Yellow Alert" indicates heavy rains between 6-11 cm. Thunderstorms with lightning, accompanied by gusty winds were likely in many places for the next two days in the state, PTI reported citing IMD sources.
A two-month-old girl and a man were killed in their sleep while 14 labourers were injured when the floor of the basement of an under-construction building collapsed here, police said on Friday, as reported by the news agency PTI. The incident occurred near Kalindi Park around Thursday midnight, a police official said.
"Some labourers who worked at the site used to live in shanties in the basement. As the floor collapsed, the labourers were buried under the rubble in their sleep," Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Sayed Ali Abbas said, as quoted by PTI.
Immediately after the incident, a team of local police officials rushed to the spot and began looking for survivors with the help of locals. Mukadam (30), a labourer, and the two-month-old girl Aishya died in the incident while 14 other injured labourers were taken to the hospital, the police officer said.
Teams of the the fire department and the NDRF have reached the spot and rescue work is underway.

A gunman killed a teacher and a local woman after opening fire in a classroom at a university hospital campus in Rotterdam and a nearby house on Thursday, Dutch police said, as quoted by Reuters.
