Supreme Court To Hear Maharashtra, Karnataka Border Dispute Today

The Supreme Court is likely to hear Maharashtra's petition on a festering territorial dispute with Karnataka on Wednesday. The border dispute dates back to the 1960s after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines.

The border dispute pertains to Maharashtra's claim to Belagavi, which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency as it has a sizeable Marathi-speaking population. It also laid claim to 80 Marathi-speaking villages which are currently part of Karnataka.

The row made headlines again after Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai indirectly laid a claim to some areas of Maharashtra. Bommai had last week said some villages in Sangli district had passed resolutions to merge with Karnataka because they are facing a severe water crisis that's not been addressed.

Ant Group, an affiliate company of the Chinese conglomerate Alibaba Group currently owns 13.3 per cent shares in the Indian food delivery firm, according to the news agency Reuters. It had previously reported that Uber Technologies had sold its 7.8 per cent stake in Zomato for $392 million via a block trade.

This development comes as Zomato has suffered in the public market amid a meltdown of tech stocks this year. The company’s stock price has fallen by more than 50 per cent from its peak of Rs 162 on the BSE. The growth of the company’s food delivery business has also slowed.
