WHO's Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution that met today to review what is known about the new COVID19 variant B.1.1.529, has advised that it should be designated as a Variant of Concern.
Preliminary evidence suggests new Covid variant B.1.1.529 carries a higher risk of reinfection than other variants, BBC reported World Health Organization as saying.
New Delhi, Nov 26 (PTI) Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat and top military commanders on Friday briefed a parliamentary panel on the operational preparedness of the armed forces, the panel's chairman Jual Oram said.
Besides Rawat, senior officials of the Defence Ministry and top commanders of the Army, Navy and the Air Force deposed before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence at the Parliament Complex.
The agenda of the meeting was briefing by the representatives of the Ministry of Defence on 'review of strategic operational preparedness of defence forces in view of current security scenario including border security'.
Oram said Rawat made a very good presentation on the subject before the panel.
Sources said commanders of all three armed forces made presentations on the operational preparedness of their respected forces. They updated MPs about the recent procurement and additions in their arsenal.
CDS Rawat gave the overall presentation on the preparedness of all three forces and various initiatives taken for development of infrastructure in the border areas, they said.
Around 11 members of the 31-member committee were present in the meeting on Friday. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was among the absentees.

(PTI): Social activist Anna Hazare was on Friday discharged from a private hospital in Pune, where he was admitted after he complained of chest pain, the hospital authorities said.
The 84-year-old anti-corruption crusader was admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic on Thursday for chest pain, following which an angiography and other tests were conducted, they said.
"Anna Hazare was discharged from the hospital today, as he is fine now. During the angiogram, a minor blockage was detected. There was no need for angioplasty or any surgery. Following treatment at the hospital, he was allowed to be discharged," said Dr Parvez Grant, chief cardiologist and managing trustee, Ruby Hall Clinic.
According to Anna Hazare's office, the social activist has been advised to take complete rest.
(PTI): Union Minister Mankush Mandviya Friday Friday said about Rs 64,000 crore will be invested by the Centre in creating health infrastructure in the country over the next five years.
The union Health & Family Welfare Minister who, was on a day-long tour to Tawang district in Arunachal Pradesh, while interacting with health officials at Khandro Drowa Zangmo District Hospital, said the central government is working to provide health security to all through various health welfare schemes, an official statement released here said.
We will work with Ayushman Bharat digital health mission which will enable us to know the history of a patient and can provide quality health services, the minister said. Mandviya also lauded the Pema Khandu government for taking various health initiatives in the state and assured all help and support from the Centre.
State health Principal Secretary Dr Sharat Chauhan presented the overall health scenario of the state through a power point presentation and apprised the union minister on the Covid-19 management and vaccination status in the state, the report said.
President of the Arunachal chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Dr Lobsang Tsetim requested that the centre take over the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) at Nahrlagun for its future sustainability, quality education and services.
Dr Tsetim also underlined the urgent need for setting up a super specialty hospital in the state besides reforms of all existing primary health centers.
Earlier, Mandviya visited the wards of the district hospital and interacted with the patients and distributed fruits among them. He also visited the Jan Aushadi dispensary in the hospital, the report added.

World Health Organization (WHO) has said that it needs time to study the new Covid-19 variant, first detected in South Africa. WHO spokesperson, Christian Lindmeier said, "early analysis shows that this variant has a large number of mutations that require and will undergo further study."
"It'll take a few weeks for us to understand what impact this variant has. Researchers are working to understand more," he added.

.A strong and shallow earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck the Myanmar-India border region early on Friday, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to the alert by the independent organisation and provider of real-time earthquake information, the quake struck 174km east of Bangladesh's Chittagong, and the tremors were felt as far away as in West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam in eastern India.
