ISRO Gears Up For 'Extremely Challenging' Experiment Of Controlled Reentry Of Aged Satellite

The "extremely challenging" experiment of controlled re-entry of a decommissioned orbiting satellite is being prepared by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), reported PTI.

Megha-Tropiques-1 (MT1), a low-Earth satellite developed by ISRO and the French space agency CNES for the purpose of studying tropical weather and climate, was launched on October 12, 2011.

The targeted re-entry zone for MT1, weighing approximately 1000 kilograms, was determined to be an uninhabited region in the Pacific Ocean located between 5°S and 14°S latitude and 119°W to 100°W longitude.

An ISRO statement noted that approximately 125 kg of onboard fuel remained unutilized at the mission's conclusion, raising the possibility of accidental breakup.

It was estimated that this fuel would be sufficient for a fully controlled atmospheric re-entry to have an effect on the Pacific Ocean island that was uninhabited.

Deorbiting to extremely low altitudes in order to ensure that impact occurs within a designated safe zone is one method of controlled re-entry.
