India added 20,557 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 4,38,03,619, while the active cases increased to 1,45,654, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday.
The death toll climbed to 5,25,825 with 40 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.
The active cases comprise 0.33 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.47 per cent, the ministry said.
An increase of 2000 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

Sunak, the British Indian former Chancellor, received 118 votes in the fourth round of voting by his party colleagues on Tuesday, just shy of the 120-mark – or one-third of Conservative Party MPs – needed to confirm his place as one of the final contenders in the race to replace Boris Johnson.
The 42-year-old leader increased his tally from Monday’s 115, while Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt got 92 votes and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss 86 votes leaving the race to clinch second place still open.
Only Sunak, Mordaunt, and Truss remain in the race after Kemi Badenoch was eliminated on Tuesday. Sunak is still the frontrunner, with Mordaunt and Truss vying for the second spot in the final round.
Work from home (WFH) is allowed for a maximum period of one year in a special economic zone unit and can be extended to 50 per cent of total employees, said the commerce ministry on Tuesday.
The Department of Commerce has notified a new rule 43A for WFH in Special Economic Zones Rules, 2006.
The ministry said the notification was issued on demand from the industry to make a provision for a countrywide uniform WFH policy across all Special Economic Zones (SEZs). The new rule provides work from home for a certain category of employees of a unit in SEZ.
India cut a windfall tax on oil producers and refiners and exempted gasoline from an export levy as international rates decline, less than a month after it imposed the two charges.
The changes will help companies such as Reliance Industries, Oil and Natural Gas Corp and Oil India Ltd.
The government said it had scrapped an export tax of 6 rupees a liter on gasoline.
Windfall tax on diesel and aviation-fuel exports would be cut by 2 rupees a litre, the government said in its statement, adding that tax on domestically produced crude oil would be cut to 17,000 rupees a tonne from 23,250 rupees.

PM Modi To Interact With CWG-Bound Indian Contingent
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will interact with the Indian contingent going to participate in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 on Wednesday, July 20. According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), athletes, as well as their coaches, will participate in this interaction through video conference.
The PMO said that the Prime Minister's interaction is a part of his constant endeavor to motivate the athletes before participating in major sporting events. Last year, the Prime Minister interacted with the contingent of Indian athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics as well as the Indian para-athletes participating in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Arvind Kejriwal To Visit Surat, Announce His First Pre-Poll 'Guarantee'
