Parameswaran Iyer Takes Charge As NITI Aayog CEO

Parameswaran Iyer, who had spearheaded the implementation of the flagship USD 20 billion Swachh Bharat Mission, on Monday took charge as the CEO of NITI Aayog.


A 1981-batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Iyer has worked with both the public and private sectors, according to an official statement.


He was secretary in the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation during 2016–20.

Contempt Case: Supreme Court Order On Quantum Of Sentence To Vijay Mallya


The Supreme Court will pronounce its verdict on the term of punishment in the contempt of court case against fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya. Mallya is accused of being involved in a Rs 9,000-crore bank loan scam involving his Kingfisher airline and has been convicted in a contempt of court case. The court found him guilty of contempt for sending $40 million to his children's accounts defying court orders.


According to the cause list of July 11 uploaded on the apex court's website, a bench of Justices UU Lalit, Ravindra S Bhat and PS Narasimha will pronounce the order. Justice Lalit, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat and Justice P.S. Narasimha had on March 10 reserved its decision on fixing the quantum of sentence to be awarded to the accused.


Supreme Court To Hear Poet Varavara Rao's Permanent Medical Bail Plea On Monday


The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday an appeal, moved by Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case accused and Telegu poet Varavara Rao, challenging a Bombay High Court order rejecting his request for permanent medical bail, news agency PTI reported. As per the report, a three-judge bench of Justices U U Lalit, S Ravindra Bhat, and Sudhanshu Dhulia is likely to take up the matter. The Bombay High Court had on April 13, rejected Rao’s appeal for permanent bail and permission to shift to Hyderabad in Telangana, citing ill health and high expenses in Mumbai.


According to the report, senior advocate Anand Grover on behalf of the former professor and a poet sought an urgent hearing on the matter pointing out that Rao’s interim bail, granted by the Bombay high court in April, ends on July 13.
