Delhi Mayoral Elections To Be Held On Feb 22

The Delhi mayoral elections will be held on February 22, after being postponed several times due to squabbles between AAP and BJP members. The House has previously been called on January 6, January 25, and February 6. But, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will meet again on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

On Saturday, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena accepted Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's suggestion to hold elections for the mayor, deputy mayor, and six standing committee members on February 22.

“As recommended by Chief Minister, GNCTD, I approve the proposal to convene the adjourned first meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 11 am for the election of Mayor, Dy. Mayor and six members to the Standing Committee," the LG's order read.

This came after the Supreme Court declared that the election for Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi be held first, and that nominated people had no right to vote at Corporation meetings.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud further asked the appropriate body to publish a notice for the mayor's election.

The Municipal House must convene within a month following the end of the civic elections to elect the mayor, according to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.

SC Will Hear Plea Against EC Decision On Shiv Sena Symbol On Feb 22

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear Uddhav Thackeray's petition contesting the Election Commission's decision to grant the name "Shiv Sena" and the "Bow and Arrow" emblem to the group led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The panel, chaired by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, consented to hear the petition on February 22 at 3.30 p.m. Senior Counsel Kapil Sibal requested the Supreme Court to consider the petition on Wednesday, claiming that if the EC ruling is not disputed and challenged, the other group will seize control of everything, including the party's bank accounts.

CJI Chandrachud said: "It will not disrupt the Constitution Bench hearing because three judges are waiting for them."

He stated that he will end the Constitution Bench hearing on the Maharashtra political crisis on Wednesday and then take up the case opposing the EC's verdict on the Sena emblem.
